Five-Member Team To Monitor Machap By-Election
ALOR GAJAH, April 3 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission (EC) has set up a five-member team to monitor the Machap state by-election here.
Its deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar, said the team comprised an EC officer, a police officer, a municipal council officer, and a representative each for the Barisan Nasional (BN) and DAP candidates.
They were tasked with monitoring the ethics, speeches and rallies held by the candidates and report to the returning officer, he told reporters after the nominations for the by-election Tuesday.
BN's Lai Meng Chong, 56, is facing DAP's Liou Chen Kuang, 33, in a straight fight in the polls on April 12.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Melaka MCA chairman Datuk Wira Poh Ah Tiam, 55, on March 15 due to renal failure.
Commenting DAP's suggestion that the by-election should be changed to a weekend, Wan Ahmad said the nomination and polling dates had been gazetted and could not be changed.
