Annuar: It’s time Nik Aziz retires
KOTA BARU, May 15 - Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s offer to remain as Mentri Besar if PAS retains control of Kelantan in the next general election shows that he is putting his self-interest and that of his party’s above that of the public, state Umno chairman Datuk Seri Annuar Musa said.
He said while Umno respected his personal decision, Nik Aziz should know that with his frail condition, he might not be able to discharge his duties efficiently as Mentri Besar.
“He should know when it is time to go. It is not just about politics. It is also about whether one can discharge his duties efficiently,” Annuar said in an interview.
He said the post was not just for someone chosen as a leader by his supporters, or a principled or a pious person.
“The candidate must be an individual who can lead the state not just on spiritual aspects but who can envision the development of the state, besides having the necessary energy to lead the drive towards realising the full potential of Kelantan.
“It is not enough to produce leaders who can talk. We need a masterplan on how to develop the state which has fallen behind others,” he said.
Annuar said the state was not well governed now and there was backbiting among those who saw themselves as successors to Nik Abdul Aziz.
Nik Aziz, 76, suffered a mild heart attack in 2005 and underwent surgery, prompting huge speculation on his political future.
