FAM Tight-lipped Over PM's Request
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) - The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has remained tight-lipped over a request by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to continue with the proposed Manchester United tour that is to be called off.
The FAM is the sanctioning body for the event and not the organisers, were forced not to sanction it following a request from Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed Hammam as it would clash with the Asian Cup tournament from July 7 to 29.
Manchester United, who were recently crowned English Premier League champions, are supposed to play against a Malaysian selection on July 27.
"We will issue a statement tomorrow," said FAM secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad when contacted by Bernama today.
Abdullah had today requested the organisers of Manchester United's Malaysian tour to go ahead with the plan.
Hammam had on Tuesday called the proposed tour of Asia by Manchester United as unethical as it would clash with the Asian Cup and his sentiments were echoed by FIFA president Sepp Blatter who was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the AFC Congress.
Subsequently, FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah told reporters that the Manchester United tour could not go on as FAM had to abide by the request from AFC.
FAM has also been warned by AFC that going ahead with the match would incur the wrath of the governing body for football in Asia.
A Hong Kong-based company is said to be responsible for Manchester United's tour of Asia.
