People Can No Longer Be Fooled - PM
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the people could no longer be fooled by uncalled for remarks that vilified and ridiculed Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders hurled by certain quarters, especially the Opposition.
The Prime Minister said BN's victory in the Ijok state seat by-election recently despite ferocious attacks against his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak by the Opposition was a clear signal from the people.
"The people are not stupid and cannot be fooled. The degrading remarks, cooked-up stories and allegations, ridiculing the leaders and party (Umno), did not have any bearing on the people," he said at the 61st Umno anniversary celebration at the party headquarters here today.
Abdullah said what mattered most to the people was what was done to improve their livelihood.
He described the Ijok by-election as the hardest-fought campaign compared to the previous four by-elections.
"My deputy (Najib) who was heading the BN election machinery was vilified by the Opposition, especially Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Parti Keadilan Rakyat advisor).
"However, thanks to our strength, consensus and cooperation, we succeeded," he said.
BN's K. Parthiban beat Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim from PKR with an increased majority when he garnered 5,884 votes compared to Khalid's 4,034 votes in the by-election on April 28.
Abdullah also reiterated his confidence in Najib's ability to pursue Umno's struggle.
"I believe in the ability and capability of my deputy. There is no problem for us to work together to ensure the success of the party's struggle," said Abdullah to cheers from about 3,000 Umno leaders and members at Dewan Merdeka.
He thanked everyone in the BN component parties who had worked hard to ensure the coalition's victory in Ijok.
"This proves that the prevailing consensus in BN since the Alliance is still thriving and intact although it is beseiged by various problems and challenges," he said.
