Don’t contest if you don’t trust EC, PAS told
KOTA BARU, May 19 - Umno Youth has come out in defence of the Election Commission, telling PAS that it should stay away from the next polls if it feels the EC is not transparent.
“If PAS is so certain the EC is incompetent in carrying out its duties, the party should not contest in the next general election,” said Kelantan Umno Youth chief Dali Hussin.
He said the EC was an independent body entrusted to ensure that the democratic process was conducted fairly and freely within the law and its jurisdiction.
“Condemning the EC is tantamount to undermining the essence of democracy and the intelligence of the people,” he said when commenting on a news portal report that quoted PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa as saying that his party might lose Kelantan because the EC was not transparent.
“Even before contesting, PAS is predicting it might lose, and the scapegoat is the EC,” said Dali, who also took swipes at claims by Parti Keadilan Rakyat that 2,000 Umno members from Kota Baru are defecting to the PKR.
State PKR chairman Nik Mahmood Nik Hassan had said the defectors would join the party on June 2 and PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim repeated the claim at a rally in Ketereh on Thursday.
“I think they would consist more of PAS members than Umno, since many PAS members are disillusioned with their leadership,” said Dali.
State Umno chief Datuk Seri Annuar Musa also refuted the alleged crossover plan as a ploy by PKR to convince PAS that it deserved to contest more seats in Kelantan in the next general election.
In the 2004 polls, the party that was previously known as Parti Keadilan Nasional contested five seats in the state, losing all of them to Umno candidates. theStarOnline
