KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 - The Anti-Corruption Agency should be placed under Parliament's jurisdiction to make it more independent, Public Accounts Committee chairman Datuk Shahrir Abd Samad said.

However, he said, this might not mean much because Parliament “might not be truly independent”.

“The situation of Parliament itself should be looked into first,” he said.

He said currently, the MPs did not get involved in the governing of Parliament, such as in determining its budget.

“While it’s good to suggest that the ACA reports directly to Parliament, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done before we come to that stage (to oversee the ACA),” he told reporters after launching the inaugural Malaysian Transparency Perception Survey 2007.

He was asked to comment on the survey findings where members of the public and the private sector suggested that the ACA be placed under Parliament to ensure an improved fight against corrup-tion. theStarOnline
