Malaysia's Mahathir challenges govt to charge him
JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 (AFP) - Malaysia's former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad on Saturday challenged the government to charge him for his alleged involvement in a judge-fixing scandal during his rule.
The government on Friday released a report that found evidence of an "insidious" conspiracy to influence the appointment of judges and had listed Mahathir, along with other top figures, as being involved.
Following the release of the report, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's cabinet agreed for the attorney-general's chambers to immediately investigate the allegations against those identified in the report, including Mahathir.
"I welcome it," the 82-year-old influential leader said at a meeting in southern Johor state.
"I want them to charge me in court. Only then will I have the opportunity to expose more conflicts faced by the judges, including those who have implicated me," he told reporters.
The report was prepared by a royal commission that investigated a video clip allegedly showing top lawyer V.K. Lingam brokering judge appointments.
"We are of the view that there was, conceivably, an insidious movement by (V.K. Lingam) with the covert assistance of his close friends," it said, citing business tycoon Vincent Tan -- Mahathir's close associate -- and secretary general of the ruling United Malays National Organisation, Tengku Adnan.
"In the process, Tun Mahathir Mohamad was also entangled," the report said, referring to the man who ruled Malaysia with an iron fist for 22 years.
The report said there was "sufficient cause" to invoke laws including those on sedition and corruption against "some of the principal individuals involved." But it did not specify who should face prosecution.
During the commission inquiry, Mahathir testified that he was not influenced by his associates when he selected judges.
His arch foe and former deputy premier, Anwar Ibrahim, unleashed a furore last year by releasing the clip, which apparently showed Lingam telling a person identified as former chief justice Ahmad Fairuz that that he would put him forward for a top job.

Malaysia's ex-PM Mahathir wants Bush, Blair and Howard tried for war crimes
LONDON (AFP), Saturday, April 26, 2008 - In a speech at Imperial College, London, Mahathir called for a tribunal to try US President George W. Bush plus former prime ministers Tony Blair of Britain and John Howard of Australia for their part in the conflict, said a spokesman for the Muslim group the Ramadhan Foundation, which set up the event.
Spokesman Mohammed Shafiq told AFP that Mahathir, who was in office from 1981 to 2003, wants to see the trio tried "in absence for war crimes committed in Iraq.
"It was a opportunity for students to put a range of questions about war crimes and the international situation.
"He said that people have to stop killing each other and use arbitration, negotiation and discussion as an alternative to violence, war and killing."
On the war in Iraq, Mahathir spoke about "the thousands dying, the economic war, the power of oil and how we could utilise some of these tools to have a leverage against the people who commit countries to war," Shafiq said.
He purposely did not speak about or answer questions from students on the political situation in Malaysia, said Shafiq.
Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is facing growing demands to quit, following an unprecedented electoral setback in March.
More than 450 people attended the speech and about 200 more had to be turned away.
Mahathir was in Cuba earlier this week to take part in the first International Conference of the Cuban Centre for Studies on Defence Information.

Doakan untuk Mahathir - Mukhriz
0 Comments Published by TasekPauh Blogspot on Monday, September 03, 2007 at 11:20 PM.

Lagi..

Malaysia's Anwar loses bid for showdown with ex-PM
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) Juky 4 - Malaysia's de facto opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, lost his bid on Wednesday for a legal showdown with his old enemy, former premier Mahathir Mohamad, whom he tried to sue for defamation.
The decision was a setback for the former deputy premier in his quest to get even. Mahathir sacked Anwar from government in September 1998 in a chain of events that landed him in jail.
Anwar criticized the ruling, saying it was a "gross injustice" to him and his family.
"I am compelled to say that this decision is utterly devoid of any legal merit," he said in a statement. He said he would appeal the decision.
His lawyer, Sankara Nair, called the decision "most disappointing, most puzzling and unexpected."
In his suit, the 60-year-old Anwar said that his former mentor, speaking at a September 2005 news conference in Kuala Lumpur, had described him as a gay man who could be a threat to people if he became prime minister.
Mahathir's lawyer said his client had a defense of justification and qualified privilege in describing his deeds as prime minister. He had asked for the case to be dropped.
"The application is accordingly allowed," High Court judge Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said in a verbal judgment.
The suit follows a string of unsuccessful attempts by Anwar to bring Mahathir, 82, to court since being sacked as deputy premier and finance minister and serving six years in jail on what he has said were trumped up charges.
Anwar was freed in 2004 after the courts quashed a sodomy case against him. However, a conviction for corruption bars him from holding political office until April 2008.
Malaysians watched Wednesday's hearing keenly, since the country's judiciary has sided with Anwar in previous rulings.
In August 2005, Anwar won a judgment of $1.2 million against author Khalid Jafri over a book that accused him of fathering a child out of wedlock, among other things. DNA tests showed the child was not his.
The same month he won an apology from a former police chief for beating him in custody in 1998 and giving him a black eye.

Malaysia's Mahathir: Fire Trade Minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 10 (AP) - Former leader Mahathir Mohamad has called for Malaysia's long-serving trade minister to be sacked, claiming she was abusing her power and undermining affirmative action policies for the ethnic Malay Muslim majority.
Mahathir, who appointed Rafidah Aziz as trade minister in 1986, reiterated that Rafidah's ministry has allowed a select few well-connected Malay businesses to import cars at cheap prices, according to an interview published Thursday by Malaysiakini.com, an independent news Web site.
Asked how such abuses could be curbed, Mahathir said, "Very simple. Remove the minister."
Rafidah has repeatedly denied allegations by Mahathir and opposition leaders that the ministry has allowed corruption to fester in its policy of issuing car import licenses, known as "approved permits," or APs.
The APs are given only to Malay companies as part of the country's affirmative action policy.
"When the ministry gives thousands of APs to one person, knowing full well that person is selling the APs (to unauthorized agents), that is aiding and abetting abuse" of affirmative action policies, Mahathir told Malaysiakini.com.
The decades-old import license program is meant to help poor ethnic Malays break into the auto industry to catch up with the economically dominant Chinese minority.
Mahathir, who retired as prime minister in 2003 after 22 years in power, has over the past year made repeated attacks on his hand-picked successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and other Cabinet ministers. But Rafidah has been his choice target.
In his interview with Malaysiakini.com, Mahathir expressed bitter disappointment about how government ministers have treated him following his retirement.
"When I stepped down, I thought I was going to have a good time being at social meetings with these people. Maybe they might even ask me my opinion," Mahathir said.
"But the moment I stepped down, I was cut off dead. They don't see me at all. From the first day, I was shocked. I thought these were my friends."
Mahathir also said it is time to dismantle parts of the affirmative action policy, known as the New Economic Policy, or NEP, for shortcomings.
"I think we should restudy it because there are certain weaknesses that have to be corrected. There are still certain areas where you have to preserve this affirmative action and certain areas where we should discard (it)," he said, without elaborating.
"Wholesale withdrawal of the NEP, I think, is not a good idea at all," he said, pointing out that the policy was responsible for uplifting many Malays, who came from villages with little opportunities and ended up being successful professionals and businesspeople. AP
Pak Lah bukan orang terbaik meneraju negara - Mahathir

Mahathir, whose enmity with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi surfaced last year, said in an interview published Wednesday that Abdullah's deputy, Najib Razak, was "the better candidate."
Mahathir told independent news Web site Malaysiakini.com that before he retired in 2003 after 22 years in power, he had considered handing the office to Najib instead of Abdullah.
"If it is a comparison between (Abdullah) and Najib, I would say that (Abdullah) was less qualified," he said. "But I also thought that he (Najib) was, maybe, a little bit young, so he should give an older person a chance. That was why I decided on Abdullah."
Asked whether he believed Najib, 53, is still the best person to lead Malaysia, Mahathir said, "I think if Najib is not so afraid of losing his (current) position if he displeases the prime minister, he would make a good prime minister."
Mahathir's comments appeared to be aimed at driving a wedge between the 67-year-old Abdullah and Najib, both of whom have repeatedly voiced confidence in each other and denied speculation of any friction. Malaysia's Cabinet and ruling party leaders have also said they support Abdullah completely.
Mahathir's main aide did not immediately answer calls on his mobile phone. Abdullah's aides could not be reached for comment.
Mahathir began attacking Abdullah for alleged nepotism and weak governance in mid-2006, but the 71-year-old elder statesman has largely steered clear of open criticism following a mild heart attack in November.
Mahathir has not presented proof to back up his allegations, and Abdullah has refrained from retaliating against Mahathir while vehemently denying the accusations.
In his interview with Malaysiakini, Mahathir said he believed Najib, who has also served in recent years as defense minister, would not have aborted Mahathir's vision of building a new bridge to neighboring Singapore.
"I think our world views will be slightly different, but by and large, they are more or less the same," Mahathir said. "I wouldn't say, for example, that Najib would drop the bridge. He was talking about building the bridge to the very last moment."
Najib was on a visit to the United States, and his aides could not be reached for comment.
Abdullah announced the scrapping of the bridge project last year, saying Malaysians were unhappy with Singapore's preconditions for the plan. Mahathir has accused Abdullah of compromising national interests and being too afraid to negotiate properly with Singapore.

Report: Ex-leader Mahathir calls for protest vote against government misconduct
Mahathir, who has embarked on a campaign since last year against alleged corruption and cronyism by his successor Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, said voters must not blindly support the ruling National Front coalition.
"Unless you send a signal to the government that, 'Look, if you don't behave yourself, you may not get my vote at the next election,' then the government will say, 'You see? The people are voting for us. We are doing well,'" he told independent news Web site Malaysiakini.
"If you vote (National Front) because you get a lot of money or because you get a lot of projects, you may get a rotten government," he warned.
Mahathir and his aides could not be reached for comments.
Mahathir, 81, who stepped down in late 2003 after 22 years in power, last year accused Abdullah of corruption, mismanaging the economy and compromising
The vitriolic attacks by Mahathir had shocked the nation given that he hand-picked Abdullah as his successor. Abdullah has denied the allegations.
Saturday's by-election to pick a new state legislator in Ijok in central Selangor state will give an indication of support for the National Front and Abdullah, ahead of general elections that may be held late this year or in early 2008.
The ruling coalition is being challenged by the People's Justice Party, led by the wife of opposition figure Anwar Ibrahim.
State officials have announced that 36 million ringgit (US$10 million; €7.4 million) will soon be spent to improve roads and public infrastructure in Ijok, a sleepy district comprising mostly palm oil and rubber plantations. AP

Anwar tak boleh berharap kejayaan besar kembali ke arena politik

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (AP) - Malaysia: Former Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad heaped scorn Wednesday on plans by his ex-deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, to re-enter politics, saying Anwar cannot make a major impact.
Mahathir, who fired Anwar in 1998 over accusations of homosexuality and corruption, said Anwar might still have enough public support to help his opposition People's Justice Party "win a few seats" in Malaysia's next general election.
"But making a comeback and taking over the government, that's a pipe dream," Mahathir, who retired as prime minister in 2003 after 22 years in power, told reporters.
After Mahathir fired him, Anwar was arrested, tried and convicted of corruption and sodomy, and sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison. He was released in 2004 after
Anwar has said the charges were trumped up because he had begun to challenge Mahathir's authority. Mahathir has denied any political conspiracy against Anwar.
Anwar, 59, declared earlier this month that he would run in May 26 elections for his party, even though his corruption sentence bars him from holding any political office and from running in general elections until April 2008.
Anwar's wife currently is the party's president and is expected to step aside for him to contest the post. If he succeeds, the party would have to apply to the Registrar of Societies to request that the ban on political office be waived.
General elections are not due until mid-2009, but speculation has risen that Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi might call polls by early next year.
Anwar has spent most of the past few years lecturing at universities abroad, but he recently began spending more time in Malaysia to help the opposition push for wider democratic rights. AP

Rekod Zulkipli bersih semasa dilantik – Dr. Mahathir
0 Comments Published by TasekPauh Blogspot on Friday, March 16, 2007 at 6:56 AM.
Ditanya mengenai isu Timbalan Menteri Keselamatan Dalam Negeri, Datuk Mohd.
UtusanOnline
Isu BPR - Mahathir nafi ketepikan Ramli kerana siasat Kasitah Gaddam
0 Comments Published by TasekPauh Blogspot on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 6:44 AM.
PUTRAJAYA (March 14, 2007): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has denied that former Sabah Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) chief Mohd Ramli Manan was put in cold storage for investigating former land and cooperative development minister Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam's corruption case.
Mahathir said people were making all kinds of accusations against him and there seemed to be a concerted effort to make his name "as dirty as possible".
"Show evidence that I have done these things," he told reporters after presenting the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce's honorary member recipients award to 12 new members here today.
Mahathir said that normally, he did not know what the ACA was doing unless it brought the case up to him.
He agreed that if the ACA wanted to charge a minister, he would be informed.
Ramli had also alleged in an interview in malaysiakini.com that Mahathir was not happy when Kasitah was being investigated.
"How did he know that I was not happy? It is very easy for him to say it because he knows that I cannot be bothered to take action against him," he said.
Asked whether it was true that during his administration, the ACA had to seek his approval before investigating a case, Mahathir said it was nonsense.
"Do you mean (to say) I spend all my time doing all that work (going through ACA cases)? If it is a minister, I would have to know," he said.
"Newspapers are now being censored, you all know, but dare not say anything against the government. During my time, a lot of things were said and people also campaigned against me but I didn't stop them."
Asked about the on-going investigation into allegations against ACA director-general Zulkipli Mat Noor and whether he knew of this when he appointed Zulkipli as the ACA chief, Mahathir said he did not know whether Zulkipli was a corrupt man or not. Neither did he know him personally.
On Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Johari Baharum's case, Mahathir said he was sure Johari had not taken "one sen".
"You can be sure after the investigations, he would be completely clear and cannot be found guilty." he said.
Asked why he would say that because Johari was allegedly involved in a Kubang Pasu vote-buying incident during the Umno party elections, Mahathir said it was because "they had decided not to go further after someone was forced to resign from his post".

"Legasi Mahathir' belum tamat! Sementara Anwar dijemput Pas untuk bertanding di Kota Bharu (lapuran the Star), Lim Keng Yaik pula menasihati pengundi 'memerhati belakang masing-masing'!
PAS invites Anwar to stand in Kota Baru
KOTA BARU, March 4 - PAS has invited Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest in the Kota Baru parliamentary seat if the court rules he can be fielded as a candidate in the next election.
PAS election strategist Datuk Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah said the party would help the former deputy prime minister to win back the seat, which it lost to the Barisan Nasional in 2004.
He said that since Parti Keadilan Rakyat was a PAS ally, it was logical for the two parties to cooperate and that includes extending this invitation to Anwar, who is PKR advisor.
Anwar was found guilty of corruption and has since been released on condition, which includes not being actively involved in politics until mid-2008.
In a related development, PKR deputy president Dr Syed Hussein Ali said the party would apply to the Registrar of Societies to allow Anwar to take over the presidency if he is elected at the party's elections in May.
Meanwhile, Anwar has threatened to file a RM10mil defamation suit against Gerakan president Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik over a statement published in a Chinese daily on Jan 27.
He has given Lim 14 days to withdraw the remarks, in which the Energy, Water and Communications Minister purportedly asked voters to “watch your back.”
Speaking to reporters in Penang, Lim said he received the legal notice on Feb 29.
He added that he would not apologise for his remark.
