No Fatwa Against Govt Policies Issued

IPOH, April 6 (Bernama) - Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the ulama in this country never issued fatwas that went against government policies and the fatwas issued were always independently made.

He said the state government had a high regard for the ulama institution and accepted all their views.

"The ulama are given every opportunity to voice their opinion which they do through seminars, muzakarah and other avenues every year, he said during the State Assembly session here today.

He was replying to a question from Abd Muhaimin Abd Rahman Nazri (BN-Gunung Semanggol) who asked whether the ulama had given out fatwas which were against the government policies.

The state government had allocated funds every year to ensure the interest of the ulama in the state were maintained.

Tajol Rosli said RM1.6 million was given to the Mufti's Office, RM31.6 million to the Islamic Religious Department and RM4.6 million to the Syariah Judiciary Department this year.

The ulama faced a big challenge including helping the people to live harmoniously, he said.

Meanwhile, Perak had taken several steps to draw some of the 20 million tourists expected to visit this country during the Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

Agriculture, Agro-based Industry and Tourism Committee Chairman Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan said among the steps taken were participation in international carnivals and holding roadshows.

Mohd Radzi was replying to questions from Datuk Chang Kon You (BN-Chenderiang), Datuk R.Ganeson (BN-Sungkai), Datuk Dr Ho wai Cheong (BN-Teja), Sham Mat Sahat (BN-Alor Pongsu), Datuk M.Ramachandran (BN-Pasir Panjang) and Datuk Hasbullah Osman (BN-Temenggor) on the same issue.

Mohd Radzi said the state government was cooperating with the bus company Roadways to advertise Perak in Selangor, Penang, Melaka and Singapore.

The session resumes on Monday.
